In 2009, the 12 houses that make up the Gänge square in the center of Hamburg were occupied. A few months later, the Süddeutsche Zeitung described the Gängeviertel as a "Mini-Christiania in Hamburg". In the article, the atmosphere and energy in the occupied square was described as a breath of fresh air in an otherwise glassy and gray mottled part of the city. The positive publicity of the anarchist activity also led to Gänge being awarded the otherwise rarely used degree of conservation "An important site of cultural diversity" by UNESCO in 2012. The comparison with Christiania is not completely out of thin air and from the conception in 2009 there has been an ongoing exchange and close contact between the two sanctuaries.
This year , artists and activists from the Gängeviertel have been invited to exhibit at (and around) Christiania's gallery: Stadens Museum for Kunst, Gallopperiet – in the birthday month of September itself.
The title and theme of the exhibition is SE PAR A T ED , a play on words that should be associated with the challenges faced by collectively minded and self-managing communities. The contradictions between individual and collective are an essential field of tension to tackle constructively and circumvent creatively, if a viable and trusting community is to have the opportunity to emerge and survive as an alternative form of life. Seen through this prism, with Christiania's new freehold status there are many new problems and pitfalls, which the visiting collective will try to articulate together with the locals and interested parties.

The exhibition processes and puts the theme into perspective with different artistic angles and tools in a versatile programme. During the month you will be able to see and participate in Dance, Music, Theatre, Installations, Performances, Readings, Discussions, Film screenings and Folk kitchens etc. Thus, the fruitful dialogue and sharing of experience around the establishment and maintenance of countercultural communities, which has taken place between Gänge and Christiania - can now be experienced, experienced and challenged on and around the Gallopperiet 6 – 28 Sept. Further information will be available during August.
Participating artists and activists: Rita Kohel, Judith Stryczek, Carsten Rabe, Till ET Haupt, Michael Ziehl, Jessica Leinen, Simon Riemer, Björn Schmidt, Tona, Nils Kasiske, Franziska Holz, Minigolfmadness, Juliane Kruppke, Franziska Schillig, Hamburger Kino, Urban Etch.
